Charles D. Matthews

Age 87 Hot Springs
October 2, 2026

Charles Dawson Matthews, 87, died peacefully in Hot Springs, Arkansas, on Sept. 21, 2026, surrounded by family.

Born in Little Rock on Feb. 12, 1939, Charles lived a life marked by family, intellectual curiosity, humor, public service, adventure and relentless optimism.

A 1957 graduate of Little Rock Catholic High School, Charles earned a degree in English from Georgetown University in 1961 and later graduated from the University Of Arkansas School Of Law. Admitted to the Arkansas Bar in 1964, he practiced law for more than half a century, helping thousands of Arkansas families and businesses. Charles also devoted much of his life to public service. He was particularly proud of his lifelong work promoting adult literacy.

Charles was a voracious reader, fierce competitor, athlete and lover of the outdoors, and planner of treasured family adventures. Above all, he was a devoted father and grandfather who challenged his children, valued education and independence, and believed life was meant to be fully lived.

Charles is survived by his wife, Candyce Jones Matthews; children, Michael Dawson Matthews (Jill), James Patrick Matthews (Tracee), Martha Ann Matthews Kirspel, William Scully Matthews (Ann) and Bess Pope Matthews (Mike); 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

His son, Jonathan Breece, and grandson, Sean Matthews, preceded him in death.

Charles was one of a kind. His family is profoundly grateful for the adventures, arguments, lessons, laughter, stories and love they shared with him.
