Donald D. Messersmith
Donald Dino Messersmith, 83, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2026. He was born on Aug. 26, 1942, in Hot Springs, Arkansas, to Dean and Ruby Harvey Messersmith.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bob Messersmith and his sister, Dorothy Lau.
Don graduated from Hot Springs High School in Hot Springs, Arkansas. After graduating, he attended Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. He later earned his Master's degree. He excelled in sports and obtained athletic scholarships in basketball.
Following college, Don proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam era. He was honorably discharged in 1969. His military service reflected the courage, discipline and selflessness that would define the rest of his life.
Don and Nina had two children, Eric Messersmith and Katy Messersmith Mattox.
Later in life, he shared many wonderful years with his dear friend, Robbie Morris. A lifelong educator, coach, and mentor, Don began his career as a teacher and coach with Seabrook Independent School District while living in Webster, Texas. He later moved to Palestine, Texas, where he devoted himself to raising Eric and Katy and became a beloved member of the community.
In Palestine, he dedicated more than 36 years as a counselor with the Windham School District at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. In that role, he found another opportunity to mentor, encourage and invest in the lives of others, believing that every person deserved hope and the chance for a better future. Whether he was counseling, coaching YMCA basketball, serving as a youth group leader at Grace United Methodist Church, working with TDCJ offenders, or simply offering encouragement to a young person who needed it, Don had a remarkable gift for making other people laugh, feel valued and capable of achieving more than they believed possible.
Driven by his deep Christian faith, Don founded Pearly Gates Retreat in Palestine, Texas. The retreat became a special gathering place where church youth groups from across the South came together to enjoy the outdoors, strengthen their faith and build lifelong friendships. Through this ministry, he touched countless lives by creating a place where laughter, fellowship, adventure and spiritual growth flourished.
Later in life he was a member of the First Christian Church in Palestine, Texas. He had a deep love for his country and all Veterans. He loved getting family and friends together to drive his 55 Chevy, 57 Chevy and 67 GMC in the Fourth of July parades to celebrate America's birthday.
To know Don was to know laughter. He never met a stranger and had an extraordinary ability to brighten any room with his quick wit, colorful stories and infectious sense of humor. His joy was contagious and his generosity of spirit left a lasting impression on everyone he met. When he wasn't investing in the lives of others, Don could often be found outdoors. He loved fishing, tinkering with projects, fixing just about anything, meeting up with other Veterans and "piddling" around the farm or yard. He loved cruising in his classic cars and riding his motorcycle. Those simple moments became cherished memories for his family and reflected his appreciation for life's everyday blessings.
Don is survived by his son, Eric Messersmith (Tara); his daughter, Katy Messersmith Mattox (Marc); his beloved friend, Robbie Morris; three grandchildren, Ryland Messersmith, Adelynn Messersmith and Nash Mattox; great-nephew, Bryan Messersmith.
He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and countless friends whose lives were forever enriched by knowing him.
Although he will be deeply missed, Don's legacy of faith, compassion, generosity, laughter and unwavering love for others will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
