Sue C. Mathews
Sue Calloway Mathews, 84, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2026, in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Sue was born and raised in Holly Grove, Arkansas, by her parents, Rudolph and Virginia Calloway, and spent most of her life in Helena, Arkansas, with her husband, Dr. John G. Mathews, who preceded her in death.
Sue graduated from Holly Grove High School, where she was valedictorian of her class and a star on the girls basketball team. She was a fierce competitor and frequently scored over 30 points per game on a successful team. She was also gifted musically as a pianist, being proficient enough that she played for services at Holly Grove Methodist Church while still in high school.
Sue attended Hendrix College in Conway, where she met the love of her life, John Mathews.
They married in 1962 and spent 54 wonderful years together before his death in 2016. John graduated from the U.T. School of Dentistry in 1964, was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army for two years. They then moved to Helena, where John practiced dentistry until shortly before his death in 2016. Sue spent her recent years as a happy resident of the Atrium Retirement Home in Hot Springs.
John and Sue built a home filled with love, laughter and warmth with their two beloved children, Steven and Jill. Their door was always open for family and friends of theirs and their children.
Sue utilized her creative talents to establish an interior decorating and design business in Helena, Sue Mathews Interiors. She was loved and respected by her customers and operated the business successfully for over 20 years, transforming homes and businesses into places of beauty and comfort for her clients.
Sue will be remembered by all who knew her for her radiant smile and infectious laughter. She brought joy through her kindness, warmth, generosity and genuine love for others.
Sue is survived by her loving children: son, Dr. Steven and wife, Niki Mathews; daughter, Jill Mathews; and all of Hot Springs. She leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, John Mathews II and his wife, Chelsea, Zachary Steven Mathews and Avery Calloway Mathews.
She is survived by brothers, Jerry Calloway and his wife, Rose of Kansas City and Doug and wife, Janet of Hot Springs. Sue will be remembered by her nieces and nephews, Stephanie Wildman, Jason Calloway, Michael Calloway, Ben Calloway and all of their children.
A graveside celebration of Sue's life will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, June 26, at Macedonia Cemetery in Holly Grove, Arkansas. A visitation preceding the service will be held at 1 p.m. at the Holly Grove Presbyterian Church Education Building.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in Sue's honor be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
