Barbara C. McDaniel
Barbara Cook McDaniel, 76, passed away peacefully on March 13 after bravely battling cancer for many years. She faced her illness with the same quiet strength, grace, and determination that defined her entire life.
Barbara was born in Lansing, Michigan, to Clyde and Donna Cook. She spent her childhood in Dubuque, Iowa, where she developed her lifelong love of learning and her gift for connecting with others. After high school, she moved with her family to Oxford, Mississippi.
Driven by a passion for helping others communicate and thrive, Barbara earned both her undergraduate and master's degrees in Speech-Language Pathology from Memphis State University. She went on to build a meaningful career in the field, touching countless lives through her work with children and adults who relied on her expertise, patience, and compassion. Later in life she became a Certified Financial Planner.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Jim, all of Oxford, Mississippi.
She is survived by her former husband and lifelong partner, Mike McDaniel, with whom she shared a deep and enduring bond; their son, Adam; and her three sisters, Pattie Le Sueur (Jack), Peggy Power (Steve), and Mary Lou Burnham, all of whom remained close to her throughout her life, and her beloved feline fur babies.
Those who knew Barbara remember her as a bright, engaging woman — warm, witty, and endlessly curious. She had a natural ability to make others feel seen and valued, and she approached every relationship with sincerity and generosity. Her laughter filled rooms, her insight guided friends and family through difficult moments, and her kindness left a lasting imprint on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Barbara loved good conversation, good books, and the simple joy of time spent with the people she cherished. She carried herself with quiet dignity, met challenges with resilience, and gave love freely and without hesitation.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor her memory may consider supporting organizations dedicated to cancer research or speech-language services — causes that reflect both her personal journey and her life's work.
The family would like to acknowledge those who provided care, including Dr. Cleveland and Coy Williams of the Genesis Cancer Center Institute, and Home Instead.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests The American Cancer Society, The Humane Society, or The McDaniel Family Scholarship in the Communications Disorders Dept. at Arkansas State University.
A celebration of her life will be held from 1-4 p.m. on April 26, 2026, at the Cortez Pavilion in Hot Springs Village.
